Maison aux Herbes

In the heart of Chartres, France

Unique * Private * Exclusive

The building

Just a few steps from the cathedral Notre Dame de Chartres, it is said to have been constructed at the same time, in the first half of the 13th century. The UNESCO plaque on the corner commemorates the medieval gate that once protected the cathedral’s cloister from marauders.

All four levels have been fully renovated in recent years. The ground floor is medieval. The first floor has been revived in the style of the late Renaissance. The second floor evokes mid-18th century France and the third floor embraces the art deco styling of the 1930s.

During your visit you will be in easy walking distance to cafés, bistrots, shops, and restaurants. It’s life in a small French town. Of course you’ll see the cathedral, famous for its stained glass and labyrinth. And Paris if you like, because it’s only an hour from Chartres by train. So even the Louvre and Eiffel Tower are an easy day trip.

How is this experience different?

Think of your stay as less like AirBnB or a hotel and more like chambres d’hotes or staying at a friend’s house. You are a guest in my home. It’s personal. You’ll see my art, family heirlooms, books, etc. You may encounter the family dog, a 12-year-old miniature schnauzer named Sophie. The apartments are furnished with antiques, original art, and some truly exceptional features.

For these reasons, bookings are direct and private. This property is not on booking sites and isn’t open to the public. Our guests are usually referred by friends or family, or by prior guests.

Scroll down to see descriptions of the apartments. Each is about 45 square meters (480 square feet) and accessible from a central staircase. We typically ask for a minimum of three nights. Payment is in cash on arrival. France’s 20% VAT is extra. There are no service fees.

The third floor

1930s ambience with a separate bedroom. It has a fully-equipped kitchen, including dishwasher and a combination clothes washer/dryer. This apartment features original art, paintings, unique furnishings, and family heirlooms (for example, the four-poster bed belonged to my grandmother and her portrait hangs opposite). There’s a large bathtub/shower combination.

2nd floor

This apartment is a studio with Louis XV ambience, around 1750. In a hidden room you’ll find a small separate kitchen, fully-equipped including dishwasher. This level has many antique furnishings, mirrors, original art, and a crystal chandelier. Most books are in English, a few are in French. The wall bed will be open during your stay.

1st floor

The first floor is a studio that evokes the late Renaissance. There’s a small separate kitchen (a hidden room), fully-equipped including dishwasher. You’ll experience 17th century furniture and original art, including a Louis XIII style four-poster bed and a hand-carved marble fireplace. Two doors lead to a  balcony overlooking the courtyard.
